Claude Monet (1840 � 1926) was a founder of French impressionist painting, and the most consistent and prolific practitioner of the movement's philosophy of expressing one's perceptions before nature, especially as applied to plein-air landscape painting.

Sandvika, Norway 1895

Monet visited Sandvika in Norway in early 1895. During his stay he painted several vies of the town and the surrounding landscape, with the mountain Ridge Kolsas featuring in many of the paintings, either in the background or as the primary subject. Perhaps the best known of the paintings is �Sandviken Village in Snow� which features the L�kke bridge in the foreground and Kolsas in the background. The bridge still stands in Sandvika today.

Morning on the Seine 1896-97

Begun in 1896, Monet's "Morning on the Seine" series was not completed until 1897 due to bad weather. Having sought out views along the river, Monet then executed the paintings from his studio boat. For an extended period he rose at dawn in order to catch the changing effects of the light as the sun rose. Later he lined up the paintings on easels in his studio to complete them as a series. Fifteen of the works were exhibited at Galerie Georges Petit in 1898.
